The Legend of Gaya Ji

According to Hindu scripture, the demon Gayasur performed such deep penance that his body itself became sacred enough to absolve any sin. To keep this power from being misused, the gods pressed him down under a great stone, and Lord Vishnu placed his foot upon it — the very footprint now enshrined at Vishnupad Temple.

Gayasur is said to have asked for one boon before being subdued: that anyone who performs Pind Daan and Shraddh at Gaya would grant peace and moksha to their ancestors. This is why Gaya Ji remains, to this day, the most sacred place in India for ancestral rituals.
